Transport Phenomena and Multiphase Systems

We study transport processes in multiphase flows to develop micro- and milli-reactors for the sustainable manufacturing of fine chemicals. To achieve this goal, we combine laser-optical measurement techniques (PIV/LIF) and predictive multiphase flow models (CFD) to identify the physical mechanisms of heat and mass transfer across length scales.  This fundamental understanding enables the design and manufacturing (rapid prototyping) of optimized multiphase flow reactors and to efficiently integrate alternative energy sources (e.g. ultra- sound, photo- and electrochemistry).
